The Relay Refresh RoadTrip traveled to the Big Apple to meet with Samm Scrabblebat in
Uptown West Manhattan. He has lived in the city since college and can recall first hand the
tragic morning of September 11, 2001 when he was in a coffee shop near the UN, about five
miles away from the Twin Towers.
Samm has been in Second Life almost nine years but took a 3 year hiatus when real life got too busy. A self proclaimed “hippie”, he came back to Second Life when he had more time and picked right back up on his “love of music” and his passion for “supporting individual’s rights to be who they want to be”. When asked who his hero was, he said he respects people who are “intelligent... who care for others... who are truthful and supportive... who are funny and do not take things too seriously...”
He is a Windows 10 desktop guy and uses a Galaxy S7 cell phone. He thinks he has “about 14,000” items in his inventory of which he jokingly said he “uses only about 4 items”. Funny movies like Sleeper and The In-Laws make him laugh, and he thinks Chris Rock is “hilarious”.
His favorite song is Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and says he is “all over the map” with his love of music. In college he hosted a radio show that played folk music and he took that to mean he could play anything that he wanted to listen to that day. He grew up listening to The Kinks, The Beach Boys and The Beatles. His favorite TV show is “LOST” and he is a fan of Dr Who and Black Mirror.
Five years ago, diagnosed with cancer and going through radiation, Samm started attending Survivor/Caregiver meetings held at Hope Haven on the American Cancer Society sim. There he met Vickie Maidstone, who was moderating the support group, and he joined her Relay Team CyberNuts.

The next year with his partner, Vann Scrabblebat, they formed their own Relay team, “Free Spirit Hippie Brigade”. Together they own a full sim called Free Spirit Farms, a Bohemian community “for modern day hippies and wanderers of Second Life... sharing the land… love of music… love of art… intelligent conversations…” Samm and Vann "Relay" through their love of music. He told us that “last year they did an all day live music festival... 10 SL live musicians… on their sim… raised a lot of money for Relay… exceeding their goal… and had a lot of fun...”
He told us he Relays for himself and his grandmother, but he emphasized that he Relays so that he can give something back for all the support he received when he was first diagnosed, both in SL and RL. One of his favorite Relay memories was when one SL musician played an extra half hour so that they could meet their fundraising goal. Not only did they meet it, they exceeded it.
Samm is the quintessential 21st century Renaissance man, knowledgeable, educated, and proficient in a wide range of fields. He not only brings these qualities to SL, but he shares them with Relay. He is truly a man with a passion for doing simple things to simply uplift our community.
